Future X Emulator
September 2018, Nokia Bell Labs, Murray Hill, NJ
What drives us to ask what’s next?
In 2016, Nokia joined forces with the historic Bell Labs to produce disruptive innovations that improve the quality of life. To demonstrate groundbreaking technologies, Nokia Bell Labs needed a groundbreaking theater. Moey created the Future X Emulator, specially commanded by a new sleeve device. A facilitator powers on and controls a 36-foot high, 270-degree projection. Audiences are immersed at once in visions of the future, complete with full-surround audio and a rumbling floor.
How to angle a projector
The media in the Cave Room creates a VR-without-goggles experience, transporting you to the future. To simulate the human field of vision, we strategically positioned an array of projectors and tested their angles until it felt natural. Animations play on every surface of the Cave Room and feel like "the real world" of the future.
How to soften a seam
When you walk forward, the ground appears fo move under your feet. When you turn left or right, everything you see shifts in the opposite direction. To create this impression in the Cave Room, we worked with Nokia to build the room's architecture. Then we carefully rounded the corners and vertices so that animations could "glide" over them without breaks.
